Unexpectedly wonderful things can happen if you just say “yes”. At this juncture in your career, it’s possible that you might not always recognize the opportunities in front of you so we recommend that you form the habit of saying yes! In doing so you remain open to all possibilities. Say yes if approached to work on a project because you will be learning things through the course of your work and you may be getting to know new colleagues (or strengthening existing relationships). Especially if you are not yet committed to a specific practice, be open to work in a variety of areas.
In addition to billable projects, say yes to non-substantive opportunities that cross your desk, i.e., attend those departmental lunches and summer associate events and participate in firm initiatives such as business development breakfasts/lunches. If your firm has a volunteer project, contribute.
