More often than not, job applicants find writing cover letters to be time consuming and question whether they are necessary. Do hiring managers actually read them? Too many end up un-read and thrown into the round file.
We recommend submitting a cover letter, except where it is expressly said not to. Your cover letter however, should not rehash your resume. Use the cover letter to expand telescopically upon points covered in your resume and touch upon those that are not.
Why submit a cover letter?
1. You can explain why you are interested in the position, especially if your background is not exactly on point. What draws you to this company?
2. You can highlight some of your skills that the job requires, answering the question of why they should hire you.
3. Use a cover letter to help you stand out.
